On August 9, members of Indonesia’s elite anti-terror unit, Special Detachment 88, arrested 71-year-old Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir in the West Java town of Ciamis. Bashir is suspected of having connections to the recently discovered terror cell in Indonesia known as al-Qa’ida in Aceh. While the group has no verifiable link to core al-Qa’ida, it does share AQ’s ideology.
